Koh Larn, Crystal Clear Turquoise Water and Pristine White Sandy Beaches That’s Not Too Far – Pattaya, Thailand.

Today we’ll take you to an island, blessed with crystal clear water and plenty of beautiful beaches, where you can make a day trip from Bangkok. It’s a wonderful island off the coast of Pattaya called “Koh Larn”. While it goes without saying that Pattaya is already one of Thailand’s most well recognized destinations, Koh Larn remains a hidden gem less known by many.

Koh Larn is a little island located approximately 7 km from Pattaya Beach, occupying about 5.6 square kilometers. There is a passenger ferry service between Pattaya and Koh Larn departing every 1 – 2 hours during the day. The trip takes about 45 minutes. A typical fare for a one way trip is 30 – 50 Baht. You can also take a charter speed boats for only 15 minute ride.

Koh Larn is very popular among the tourists who come to visit Pattaya because it offers them a brief escape during the day from the urban frenzy of Pattaya, to retreat in this tranquil island with clear turquoise water and glorious beaches where they can sunbath on powdery white sand, or scuba dive over tropical reefs to experience a close encounter with the underwater marine life. In the evening, after the whole day of chilling out on this little paradise, they still have plenty of time left to go back to enjoy extraordinary nightlife in Pattaya.

Activities

Once on the island, you have quite a variety of transport options available to get you around Koh Larn. You can either take songthaew minibus taxi serving on the main beach, the fare is 40 – 80 Baht depending on the distance, or you can rent a motorcycle to explore the island on your own.  Motorbike rentals are widely available on the island. You can find these motorcycle rental places around the pier and average daily rental cost is about 300 – 500 Baht.

Three of the most visited beaches on Koh Larn are Tawaen Beach, Thien Beach and Samae Beach. All these beaches are famous for their long stretch of fine golden sands, which have enough space to accommodate large number of tourists at a time. The beaches are lined with colorful beach chairs and selection of restaurants.  There’s also a wide range of water activities available, including jet skis and banana boats. For anyone who seeks idyllic peace and tranquility, “Ta Yai Beach” would be an excellent choice for quiet beach retreat due to its remote location and the size that’s not too large. The beach is enclosed at both ends by the rock walls where coral enthusiasts can find variety of reef dwelling creatures that shelter and reproduce within this marine landscape.

Besides the aforementioned activities, visitors can also charter a boat to go around for fishing or snorkeling at the neighboring islands.

Accommodation

There are many different accommodations alternatives available on the island. Prices start from less than a thousand baht to three or four thousand baht a night depending on the location and facilities. Be prepared for occasional voltage drop and blackout during Friday to Saturday due to heavy load.

Food

Most local restaurants on the island serve typical Thai dishes such as Som Tam - Kai Yang (papaya salad and grilled chicken), Tom Yum Goong (spicy prawn soup with lemon grass) or fried rice, while most guesthouse and resort have their own restaurants that include international cuisines in their menu. There’s only one 7-11 near Na Ban Pier where you can also find variety of inexpensive foods and beverages.

Travel Tips

     - Koh Larn is the favorite spot for visitors who seek peace and solitude, which means there’s literally no night life on the island. If you prefer the excitement of a night out in the city, you’d better take the ferry back to Pattaya in the eveing instead of spending the night there.

     - Koh Larn could probably offers you the most beautiful beaches as close to Bangkok as you can get, travel expense is not too high, besides that, it’s near Pattaya. Fantastic!

     - I stayed at Lareena Resort (www.lareenaresort.com), a cozy room perched on the stilts over the water. Room rate is 2,500 Baht a night including breakfast.
